Independence Library and the area's historic destinations offer starting points for a family outing. Think about where you'd go on an ordinary afternoon, too, and how you'd reach childcare or fit in groceries. The places you return to every week are part of finding a home that feels right.
In a loft, look at bedroom separation, natural light and sound rather than judging space only by square footage. In a townhouse, get a feel for stairs, storage and laundry. In either case, check how a stroller, bicycle and everyday deliveries move through the entrance.
Schools and childcare
Use the School District of Philadelphia enrollment and school finder resources for the exact home address. Confirm assignment and enrollment details with the district, including any application process for another school option.
Use Pennsylvania's COMPASS child care search to start a provider search. Contact providers about age groups, hours, availability and pickup arrangements, then try the trip from the home.
Finding the right home here
Ask about sound separation and maintenance in converted buildings. Review association finances, planned façade or roof work and any shared-space restrictions. For historic homes, understand the condition and upkeep of original materials.

Daily life, parking and getting around
Walk the block during a workday and come back when nearby restaurants are busy. Try the route to transit, then make a separate trip toward the waterfront. You'll get a better sense of the crossings and the places you'd stop along the way.
Use SEPTA's current trip planner for the journey and travel time you expect to keep. If you drive, verify parking terms and access for the specific home.

Test transit and waterfront access as separate routes from the home.
There’s no need to rush. Bring the stroller if you use one, leave time for an errand and take the walk you’d make from home. A weekday visit and another in the evening can help you get a feel for the neighborhood.
