Family life in Fishtown

Penn Treaty Park and the Fishtown Community Library give you a couple of good places to start a family visit. Leave time for the walk between home and the places you'd use most. A library stop, outdoor play and an easy trip back for dinner can tell you a lot about how a location might fit your family.

Older rowhomes can have compact stairs and limited storage. Lofts may have generous open space but less separation between sleeping and living areas. Check bedroom privacy, the entrance, laundry and storage for bikes or a stroller alongside the square footage.

Use the School District of Philadelphia enrollment and school finder resources for the exact home address. Confirm assignment and enrollment details with the district, including any application process for another school option.

Use Pennsylvania's COMPASS child care search to start a provider search. Contact providers about age groups, hours, availability and pickup arrangements, then try the trip from the home.

Buying a home in Fishtown

Compare the ownership costs of a rowhome with those of a loft or condominium, rather than comparing asking prices alone. For a converted building, ask what the association maintains, how shared repairs are funded and whether parking or storage is included. For a renovated rowhome, ask which major systems were replaced and review the roof, masonry, basement and sewer line with your inspector.

A roof deck adds another part of the home to evaluate: access, drainage and documentation matter alongside the view. Near Front Street or a music venue, spend time in the bedrooms and any work space during the hours you expect to use them. A daytime showing may not answer questions about evening sound.

Daily life, parking and getting around

Walk Frankford Avenue, turn onto a side street and come back in the evening. You'll get a fuller picture than a showing alone can give you. If a home is near the train or a music venue, spend a few quiet minutes in the bedrooms and work space, with the windows both open and closed.

Use SEPTA's current trip planner for the journey and travel time you expect to keep. If you drive, verify parking terms and access for the specific home.

There’s no need to rush. Bring the stroller if you use one, leave time for an errand and take the walk you’d make from home. A weekday visit and another in the evening can help you get a feel for the neighborhood.
